Ted Lasso’s Lessons in Safety Leadership 12.0 – “Personal Board of Directors”

In leading the Richmond Greyhounds, Ted Lasso has his ‘Diamond Dogs.’ This group is called to help with personal issues. There’s some silliness in their howling when convening and concluding. Its purpose, however, is serious. This group provides comradery, trust, counsel and caring.

The Diamond Dogs got me thinking. When you have tough, personal choices, do you have a group like the Diamond Dogs? I call it my Personal Board of Directors (PBOD).

When I have tough decisions, I reach out to my PBOD. Sometimes it’s about approaches to take with clients. Often, it’s about career choices. At times, it’s about personal issues. Even personnel issues, confidentiality, of course.

Your personal PBOD is there to tell you the unvarnished truth. To get that, the PBOD should come from different walks of life. Folks who think differently. People who have different life experiences and people who you admire for their life choices. It’s good to get people in your field and outside of it, too! Pick PBOD members who know you and you stay in touch with.

The time to think about having a PBOD is before you really need them. Nurture your relationships. Build trust. Share your experiences and seek advice and opinions.

You don’t have to howl like a dog to have a PBOD. You do have to invest in the relationship.
